Prior more info to the Shooting

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies initially got calls about the park around 6:30 in the evening after receiving reports of persons possibly in possession of concealed weapons. Soon after, additional information came in regarding a possible fight happening near the park.

Air support searched from above but could not confirm any ongoing fight. However, it was apparent that hundreds of people had congregated at Howe Park without permission.

How the Shooting Unfolded

Law enforcement personnel set about removing people from the park by positioning themselves around the crowd and using their vehicle PA systems ordering attendees to clear out. About 15 minutes were provided for the crowd to leave.

At the height of the dispersal effort that upwards of 20 gunshots echoed through the night. Gunfire triggered a stampede. Officers swiftly started looking for those injured.

The Shooting Victims

By the time the scene was secured, four people were located with gunshot injuries. Those injured — including a female and three males all reportedly in their 20s — were airlifted or driven to nearby hospitals. Hospital staff indicated that two victims were in serious condition, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. According to authorities, all four victims survived and were stable.

Sacramento fire crews assisted at the location and helped care for those who had been shot prior to hospital transport.

Physical Evidence

The primary shooting scene was determined to have unfolded near the Cottage Way side of the park close to the Home Depot store located at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Detectives identified additional shell casings along Cottage Way. Bullet damage were observed in the iron fence alongside the Home Depot store. This ballistic evidence pointed to that a second shooter had been shooting in a southerly direction from the Cottage Way area toward the Home Depot building and parking lot. The store itself was put under lockdown during the incident. CSI investigators and detectives continued working well into the night.
